The factors which limit the maximum output power for an audio amplifier are - Voltage, Current and temperature.
i) Voltage- The maximum amplitude of the waveform which the amplifier can output is limited by the amplifier's power supply voltage. This determines the peak momentary output power for a given load resistance.
ii) Current- All the electronic and electrical devices connected to the amplifier output have a current limit. If the amount of current is more than the limit it will damage the external equipments. This determines the minimum load resistance that the amplifier can drive at its maximum voltage.
iii) Temperature- Some of the electrical energy is wasted as heat by the amplifier output devices. If it is not removed as soon as possible the temperature will go on increasing and at certain point it will reach the temperature limit and will damage the devices. This determines the continuous output power.
