Spirogyra is a filamentous green algae which is characterized by the presence of a Ribbon like chloroplast inside it. This chloroplast is present across the cell of the Spirogyra. It has many pyrenoids in it. This type of structure of chloroplast is present in this algae so as to maximize the amount of solar energy falling on it.
Pyrenoids are proteinaceous structures which are responsible for carrying out carbon fixation inside the algal cell and also for formation and storage of starch.
Because of its filamentous appearance, spirogyra is commonly known as pond scum.
