Sodium sulphite is a salt of strong base (NaOH ) and weak acid (sulphurous acid i.e H2SO3 ) .

So, the aqueous solution of sodium sulphite is basic in nature.

This basic nature of sodium suphite is due to the presence of excess hydroxide ions on hydrolysis with water . This can be shown in form of reaction as

SO32- + H2O HSO3- + OH-

as it is evident from above equation that the aqueos solution of Na2SO3 is basic in nature
