Discuss how the difference in molecular weight, density, and polarity could be used to predict the elution order when doing column chromatography.

Homework Answers
Molecular weight and Elution:
Larger the molecular weight, larger the size of the molecule. Larger the size of the molecule, it would not fit into the pores of the stationary phase in the column. Thus they get eluted out fastest.
Density:
Larger the density, the compound has more mass and lesser volumn. Because it occupies lesser volumn it would come out slowly.
Polarity:
If the column has a polar stationary phase: Non polar components are the first to be eluted out as they do not bind to the polar stationary phase. The polar components come out last.
If the column has a non-polar stationary phase, Polar scomponnets are eluted out first and the non-polar solvents come out last.
