Hello Student,

There are many unknown dangers around our home, A hazardous material is any item or which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors. List of items in your home that contain hazardous material are:

1. Toilet Cleaner---The corrosive ingredients that make acidic toilet bowl cleaners clean so well are the same ingredients that can cause burns on skin and eyes.

2. Non-Stick Cookware--- Polytetrafluoroethylene the coating that makes products "non-stick" releases gases when heated, which increases risk for cancer and other harmful health effects.

3. Mothballs--- Naphthalene found in mothballs can destroy red blood cells and has been proven to cause cancer in animals.

4. Air Fresheners---Toxins found in air fresheners can accumulate in the body over the time.

Others hazardous material are Aerosols , Ant/roach killers, Antibacterial products and disinfectants, Antifreeze, Batteries, Charcoal, Chlorine bleach, Fertilizer etc.

There are various ways to dispose the hazardous material some of them are:

  1. Locate a drop-off facility
  2. Use waste containers with leak-proof, screw-on caps so contents can't leak if a container tips over.
  3. If necessary, transfer waste material to a container that can be securely closed.
  4. Use a home pickup service
  5. Recycle hazardous waste.
  6. Keep waste containers closed except when adding waste.
  7. Wipe down containers prior to your scheduled collection date.
  8. Request by-mail-kits.
  9. Recognize common household hazardous wastes. Hazardous waste can find its way into most household.

One consumer product to investigate on the hazardous materials used during manufacture and the hazardous by-products and wastes produced during manufacture is Battery, as Battery contains lead, sulfuric acid, cadmium etc. Lead is a toxic metal that can enter the body by inhalation of lead dust or ingestion when touching the mouth with lead-contaminated hands. If leaked onto the ground, acid and lead particles contaminate the soil and become airborne when dry, sulfuric acid in a lead acid battery is highly corrosive and is more harmful than acids used in most other battery systems. Contact with eye can cause permanent blindness swallowing damages internal organs that can lead to death, Cadmium used in nickel-cadmium batteries is considered more harmful than lead if ingested. Workers at NiCd manufacturing plants in Japan have been experiencing health problems from prolonged exposure to the metal.

Please put a thumsup if you got the required answer.

Thankyou
