would you recommend the water displacement method for matching the density of a soil sample found at the scene of a crime with dirt obtained from the bottom of a suspects shoe?

Answer #1

I wouldn't recommend using water displacement method to match the density of the two soil samples. This is because soil absorbs water. So the actual elevation in water level will be lower than expected. Also the suspect's shoe may also contain soil from other sources which may give an error in volume due to different absorption rate of water than the soil sample of crime scene. So the sample densities may not match. So water displacement method is good for measuring volume of rigid objects where chances of water absorption by the object is lower. Soil being very good water absorbent is not suitable for this method.

You are measuring the density of a solid object by displacement. The volume of water in the cylinder initially is 30.7 (plusminus 0.3 mL) and the volume after the solid metal sample sank was 34.5 (plusminus 0.3 mL). Find the volume of the metal sample and calculate the uncertainty in the volume reading. Remember to retain one extra sig fig for the next calculation.
