Answer #1

We would measure 20 cycles of the pendulum motion to determine the period, rather than one period as timing only one cycle would be inaccurate. So for the sake of getting a most precise value, we measure 20 cycles instead of one.

Later, we can divide by 20 to get the exact value.

For ex: for 20 cycles we get 15 s

so for one cycle

T = 15/20 = 0.75 sec

    The period of a pendulum (i.e. the time it takes to swing back and forth over one cycle of motion) can credibly be believed to depend on both the length of the pendulum and the acceleration due to gravity. We can write this as Where C is some unknown constant, L is the length of the pendulum, g is the acceleratio lue to gravity, and x and y are unknown. Using dimensional analysis, determine how T lepends on L and...

    mg mg sin Here it is assumed that the mass is released with zero velocity at an initial angle, 0 < α < π. We would like to determine the equation of motion for the pendulum and its period of oscillation. Do the following. The period P of the pendulum is defined to be the time required for it to swing from one extreme to the other and back-that is, from α to-α and back to α. Show that the...

    1. Pendulum clocks are very important for the history of exploration.   Accurate time was the best way to determine one's longitude, since the time of sunrise or sunset depends sensitively on your longitude. In this regard, the great enemy of accuracy was thermal expansion of the pendulum used for the chronometer. We are considering a large mass attached at the end of a brass rod.   The mass at the end is much greater than the mass of the rod, so we...

    Swing away: a) A pendulum undergoing simple harmonic motion completes a cycle in a time T. If the pendulum’s amplitude is doubled, the time required for one cycle is still T, even though the pendulum covers twice the distance. How can this be? Explain. b) A pendulum is made from a bowling ball sized hollow plastic sphere filled with sand. It is anchored from the ceiling using a 10-ft long rope and set into motion. As it swings, sand leaks...

    2.  It is said that walking at a comfortable speed involves a pendulum-like motion of your legs.  We want to see how good this claim is quantitatively.       (A) First we are going to predict your gait.   The legs are not a SIMPLE pendulum, in that all the mass is not concentrated at your foot, but is distributed.    For such a pendulum the period T is given by the equation  T = 2π √(I/mgL) where I is the moment of inertia.  ...
