. Here c is the confidence level. We have to find out the critical value of t statistic , tc.

i)  The degrees of freedom (df) are 1 less than the sample size i.e., 17-1=16. The confidence level c = 0.98. The significance level is (1-c)= 0.02.

Now we search the t-table and match the relevant column and row with the given values.The critical value of t is found to be

tc = 2.583.

ii)For sample size 9, degree of freedom is 8. Here the confidence level c = 0.99. proceeding in the same manner as in (i) we use the t-table to find the critical value of t as

tc = 3.249

We compare tc with computed value to reject or accept the null hypothesis
