Answer #1

A page is indexed (also called live) when a search engine has read the contents, made all the connections, filed it away and is ready to return it when someone asks a relevant question.

A page is cached when a search engine takes a snapshot of it.

Obviously there's less work in cacheing a page, than indexing it. A page won't initially be cached until after it's been indexed, but after that, you'll often find that the cache is updated to show changes quicker than the index is.
