1. List the characteristics about microbes ( Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoans, Helminths, Viruses ), and make sure include which organisms are decomposers.

2. Describe helpful applications of microbes.

3. How are bacteria classified or identified?

4. Explain Virulence factors and Virulence activity/ ability. Look up Haemophilus influenzae, provide an example of a virulence factor from this bacterium and the ability/activity of this factor.

1.

Bacteria

Prokaryotic organisms which are devoid of membrane bound organelles and nucleus.

DNA is present as genetic material in the middle of the cell in a condensed membraneless region called nucleoid.

Chromatophores are cell organelles which contain pigments responsible for photosynthesis.

Mesosomes are plasma membrane invaginations which are responsible for carrying out respiration.

Flagellar is present for movement of the bacterial cell.

70S ribosomes are present.

Show a diversity of Nutrition like phototrophs and chemotrophs, autotrophs and heterotrophs.

Fungi

Eukaryotic cells which contain a well defined nucleus in which DNA is present which is the genetic material.

All other membrane bound organelles like mitochondria, vacuoles, lysosomes are present.

Show heterotrophic mode of nutrition because they are devoid of chloroplast and chlorophyll.

Cell wall is made up of a polysaccharide called chitin.

Mainly non motile in nature due to absence of flagella.

Cells are elongated tube like multinucleated called as hyphae. Many hyphae combine to form network like structure called mycelium.

Glycogen is reserve food.

Protozoans

Eukaryotic cells composed of a well defined nucleus and all other membrane-bound organelles.

Some of the protozoans contain chlorophyll and show autotrophic nutrition, Where are some other are heterotrophic in nature.

Cell wall is made up of cellulose and is arranged as soap box.

Helminthes

Worm like Eukaryotic organisms made up of well defined nucleus and membrane bound organelles.

Show heterotrophic mode of nutrition.

Do not have cell wall.

Body is not segmented.

They are microscopic in nature.

Can we flat worms like called as Platyhelminthes or round was called as aschelminthes.

Viruses

Viruses are microscopic organisms which are present in the border between living and nonliving organisms. These are made up of proteinaceous coat and a genetic material. Genetic material is either RNA or DNA but never both. An envelope may or may not be present and is derived from the host cell.
