Pigeons are birds in the dove family. They are stocky birds with short necks and a slender beak. Pigeons feed primarily on vegetation, however they consume human food as well. Pigeons are the oldest domesticated bird and much study has been dedicated to pigeon characteristics. Many people breed and race their pigeons, known as homing pigeons. Smokey is the gene responsible for the "slate" color of homing pigeons. It is a simple autosomal recessive gene. We will use the letter "t" to represent the allele.
