A democracy is a type of government where in the citizens of the country vote to chose their representative in the government.

Under this system, the country is run by elected representatives chosen by the general public through voting.

Every citizen of the country (barring criminals) should participate in choosing their representatives to run the country for their mutual benefit.

Yes, US is a democracy now, since its independence in 1776. This is because the US Constitution states that the public or the citizens of the country have the right to chose their representatives.
