Answer #1

Ionic crystals are hard because of compact and tight-packed lattices. It has both a negative and positive charge strongly attached to each other.

when these crystals are struck or any force is applied the ions of similar charge inside the crystals gets closer to each other which in turn creates the electrostatic repulsion. This electrostatic repulsion is quite enough to cleave and break the lattice structure in crystals. Thus imparting the brittle character in it.
