Culture, context, and behavior
David Matsumoto
Journal of personality 75 (6), 1285-1320, 2007
In this article David Matsumoto proposes a model that posits three major sources of influence on behavior
1. basic human nature (via universal psychological processes),
2.culture (via social roles),
3.personality (via individual role identities) and argue
According to David Matsumoto individual behaviors are the products of the interaction between the above three.
He discusses how culture emerges from the interaction of basic human nature and the ecological contexts in which groups exist, and how social roles are determined by culture‐specific psychological meanings attributed to situational contexts.
Also the situational context moderates the relative contributions of the three sources in influencing behavior. He also provides examples of apparent contradictory findings in the study of emotion that can be explained by the model proposed.
