Iron dependent enzymes play a significant role in catalyzing a variety of different biochemical reactions in the human body. Oxygenases are a family of iron-dependent enzymes that facilitate hydroxyl - group addition of one or both atoms from diatomic oxygen.

Another class of enzymes are cytochromes which act as single-electron transporters, mainly as electron shuttles in photosynthesis and oxidative -phosphorylation. These enzymes switch the oxidation state of the heme-iron atom between ferrous and ferric.
