A spring is resting vertically on a table. A small box is dropped onto the top of the spring and compresses it. Suppose the spring has a spring constant of 500 N/m and the box has a mass of 2.8 kg. The speed of the box just before it makes contact with the spring is 0.55 m/s. (a) Determine the magnitude of the spring’s displacement at an instant when the acceleration of the box is zero. (b) What is the magnitude of the spring’s displacement when the spring is fully compressed?

Answer #1

(a) the acceleration is zero when the weight is equal to the spring force

mg = kx

x = mg / k

x = 2.8 * 9.8 / 500

x = 0.05488 m

----------------------------------------------

(b) When the spring is fully compressed, the velocity is zero

1/2mv2 + mgx = 1/2kx2

1/2 * 2.8 * 0.552 + 27.44x = 250x2

250x2 - 27.44x - 0.4235 = 0

x = 0.123 m (discard the negative value)

    A small box with a weight of 25.0 Nis placed on top of a larger box that has a weight of SSO N. The system of two boxes is at rest on a horizontal surface (the larger box is in contact with the surface). You apply an additional downward force of 26.0 N to the top of the small box by resting your hand on it. For this problem, use - 10 N/kg. (a) What is the magnitude of the...

    A box of mass m is dropped from a height H above a spring. The platform has negligible mass. The spring has spring constant k. (a) By what amount is the spring compressed? Your answer requires the quadratic equation; to choose the correct root, note that x needs to be positive. (b) What is the speed of the box when it is first in contact with the platform? A massless spring of a spring gun has a force constant k=800 N/m. A ball of mass 0.5 kg is resting on top of the spring. The ball compresses the spring by d as shown in the right figure. When the gun is fired vertically, the ball reached a maximum height of 5 m from the top of the spring as it returns to its natural length. Calculate how much the spring was initially compressed (d). A spring stretches 0.150 m when a 0.300 kg. mass is hung vertically from it. From this information you can determine the spring constant, k. Next, the spring is set up horizontally with the 0.300 kg. mass resting on a frictionless table. The block is pushed so that the spring is compressed 0.100 m from the equilibrium point, and released from rest. Determine: The spring constant k (in N/m)? The amplitude of the horizontal oscillation (in m)? The angular frequency,...

     A student pushes a baseball of m = 0.11 kg down onto the top of a vertical spring that has its lower end fixed table, compressing the spring a distance of d = 0.12 meters. The spring constant of the spring is k = 580 N/m. Let the gravity potential energy be zero at the position of the baseball in the compressed spring. Part (a) The ball is then released.
