Walmart:

Company Overview:

Walmart Inc. is world’s largest company by revenue in 2018. It operates in chain of hypermarkets, discount stores and grocery stores. Founded in 1962 by Sam Walton, the company incorporated in 1969. It owns Sam’s Club retail warehouses. With presence in 27 countries, and operating in 55 different names Walmart has 11,277 stores worldwide. The company was listed in 1972 under New York Stock Exchange. Walmart in South America, UK and China are successful, while the stores in Germany and South Korea failed in generating expected revenues.

Problem/Situation in Walmart:

As the company is generating great revenues in the USA and other countries, it is facing the problems in China and India. In China Walmart is not able to maintain its low price store status. Apart from that in China the products are not according to the tastes and preferences of Chinese people. In India, Walmart could not enter as multi-brand retail store. As a solution, it has acquired, Flipkart, India’s largest e-commerce site.

In the USA, Walmart’s profit share is decreased. According to some research, it is due to Amazon. Amazon has forced Walmart to sell products online in addition to its retail stores.

Recommendations related to strategy:

Amazon is beating Walmart. Not because of the prices or product, but due to the customer satisfaction. As Amazon works with the motto of ‘Earth’s most customer centric company’, it pays attention to the customer needs. It focuses on to fulfil customer needs by eliminating delays, defects and out of stock products.

Corporate Level Strategy: Company should focus on the projects that are revenue generators with less legal complications. In India Walmart is facing the issues regarding the taxes and other formalities.

Business Level Strategy: Walmart should focus on customer satisfaction with cost leadership strategy. In that case, it serves to the customers who check in the stores. But tracking their needs, following up to fulfil the needs are strategically important. Walmart can introduce subscription offers.

Functional Level: As Walmart is well known for its logistic and supply chain management, it should focus on Customer Relationship Management also.

Recommendations related to product/ service:

In this 21st century of competition, it is not about product. Walmart considers itself as a product company. In this era, it is about giving services. Walmart should consider its online business as a part of its retail chain, not as a separate line of business. It should invest in harvesting its online sales.
