Problem 1: A string is wrapped around the edge of a ring of mass 3.00 kg and radius 8.00 cm (I MR2). The string is tied to a spring (k 750. N/m) that is initially stretched 25.0 cm. The ring is released from rest and rotates without friction. How fast is it spinning at the instant the spring is unstretched?

In a lab involving a pulley, a block, and a spring scale to measure force, imagine the following scenario: You tie one end of a meter-long string to something fairly solid like a doorknob. You put the pulley over this string, so the sheave of the pulley is on top of the string, and the other end of the string goes straight back up. Then, the block is hung directly from the pulley. Q1: Predict, using Newton’s second law and...

    4. (25 points) In a famous Physics 218 experiment it was discovered that a real spring doesn't totally follow Hooke's Law. The force exerted by the spring is found to be a linear function of the amount stretched, as Hooke's Law says. However, instead of having Fy -ky where y is the amount stretched, the actual force exerted by the spring is approximately given by F,-(ky+b). Here k and b are known constants. Thus if the spring is vertical there...
