Due to steric interaction torsional strain take a major role in the destabilization of the compound. The binding interaction between two chains like hydrogen bonding gets disrupted by steric interaction. This effect is most important for protein and other biomolecules because side chain pendant group may restrict hydrogen bonding and may also disrupt the geometry of the compound.
