During the last five decades, it is trending amongst the African-American community are single-parent homes ran by women. Over the last 50 years , the black family has seen the single mothers numbers rising as the woman take responsibility of their children and households. There is increase in unemployment rates among youth and adults. As a result there are more women who work and bring up their children.

The reasons for lack of family values and structure within the black community are that there is less influence of community and fatherhood which has led to less cultured and disciplined lifestyle. Single mothers are busy in the responsibility for work and family obligations and pay less time to upbringing of children in the family.
