Guaifenesin is a glyceryl gluaiacolate with expectorant effects. This is usually taken to assist the expectoration (bringing up) of phlegm along from the airways in acute respiratory tract infections. It also reduces the viscosity of mucus secretion by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension as well as increasing the hydration of mucus.

Yes, it is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly metabolized and excreted in the  urine. It is soluble in water. It is equally absorbed by all parts of gastrointestinal tract and action takes place through stimulation of gastrointestinal tract.
