A complex electronic system is built with a certain number of backup components in its subsystems. One subsystem has eight identical components, each with a probability of 0.35 of failing in less than 1,000 hours. The sub system will operate if any four of the eight components are operating. Assume that the components operate independently.

Find the probability that the subsystem operates longer than 1,000 hours.

Answer #1
here this is binomial with parameter n=8 and p=0.35

probability that the subsystem operates longer than 1,000 hours.=P(at most 4 fail):

P(X<=4)= x=0a     (nCx)px(1−p)(n-x)    = 0.8939

    Case 27 To Use or Not to Use? Beaufort Sea Production Company (BSPC) operates a medium-sized oil field on Alaska’s north coast. The field is still producing at its maximum rate, 325,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD). However, to sustain this rate the company started a waterflood of the reservoir two years ago. Now a capacity bottleneck in the water disposal process is threatening to curtail production. In waterflooding, salt water from the Beaufort Sea is treated to remove...
