According to Ayer, statements are meaningless unless they are tautologies (true by definition) or "statements of fact" (they can be proved by sense observation).

Do you agree with Ayer that statements are meaningless unless they are tautologies or statements of fact? Where does this position leave statements such as "abortion is immoral"?

I agree with Ayer's assertion statements are meaningless unless they are tautologies (true by definition) or "statements of fact" (they can be proved by sense observation). When it comes to statements such as "abortion is immoral", I would say that these represent personal beliefs and opinions rather than objective realities. My thinking is in line with Carnap, who stated that statements that are not tautological or statements of fact are comparable to a poem in that they are based on feelings.
