UV mainly damages the DNA and nucleotides present in it.

UV leads to breakage of hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides. Free nucleotides, thymine mainly, forms covalent bonds between themselves and make thymine dimers. These thymine dimers are stable. So basically the DNA stands damaged and the organism is unable to perform basic metabolism.
