How would you explain the concept of supply chain management to your children? They are 8 and 10 years old. Provide an example that they would understand.

The concept of supply chain management is the intricate coordination of various activities that help in the flow of goods from being raw materials to final products of consumption. To explain this concept to young children, it requires help from real-life examples from which they can derive the core idea of the whole supply chain management.

It can be done in the following manner:-

While sending them off to school, ask them who prepared their lunchbox. They are probably going to name the parent who prepares it. When they come back, take them to a grocery store and remind them again of the question you asked in the morning. Help them in understanding what all ingredients were required to prepare their lunch and how they are grown and from where they are imported or procured. Explain to them how the grocery store stores the products until the customer buys them. The logistics of the customer in bringing the products home and storing in the refrigerator to expand their longevity. And how it ultimately culminates into the lunch prepared.

Using the above examples, the supply chain management can be explained to the children and they will have a better understanding of the various stages such as procurement of the raw materials, production of goods, logistics and storage in the various warehouses until they reach the point of final consumption.
