Three work values: Intrinsic Values, Extrinsic Values, Lifestyle Values

Questions:1. Analyze which of the three categories is most important to you. How is each reflected in the work or schoolwork you currently do? Are there overlaps in your values that seem to go together, such as “be wealthy” from Extrinsic Values and “save money” from Lifestyle Values? 2. Write two or three sentences describing or summarizing how your values will translate into your ideal job. Knowing what’s important will help you prepare for your next interview or help you find increased satisfaction with the job you have. What motivates you (are your rewards already a part of your lifestyle)? What can you do to incorporate your values into your lifestyle?

Answer #1

1) In a Schoolwork, the three categories of values are classified as follows

Intrinsic values – Essential to sustain life – knowledge, health, peace, novelty, security, happiness

Extrinsic values – Appearance – Dress, vehicle, home, phone

Lifestyle values – Attitude – fashion, trendy, fit and healthy

There is overlap in the three categories. Consider the aspect of happiness as an intrinsic value, wearing a particular dress or owning an expensive vehicle (extrinsic value) may bring happiness (intrinsic value) and similarly being trendy or fashionable (Lifestyle value) may bring happiness (intrinsic value)

As a result of the above analysis, intrinsic values are the most important as it forms the basis for the other two categories

2) From the intrinsic values (knowledge, health and peace), it could be said that a career in healthcare or education sector would bring increased satisfaction in the job but it depends on the education and various other constraints leading to the ideal job

The intrinsic values form a big source of motivation especially knowledge

To incorporate the intrinsic values into the lifestyle, the knowledge value could be incorporated through life long learning, health value could be incorporated through physical exercises and balanced diet, peace could be incorporated through the ideal work and setting of the work
