Darwin's opinion that living forms must be descended from extinct forms was based on fossil evidence.

Charles Darwin discovered fossils in south america which were similar to present day armadillos. But on further detailed analysis with Richard Owen they came to know that the fossils belonged to glyptodons, which were already extinct and are closely related to armadillos. This evidence helped Darwin to believe that living forms must be descended from extinct forms.
