In your own words, give 10 recommendations that could help to improve ports in West Africa.

Ports have always played a significant role in the trade-dependant regions of west Africa. More than $10 billion is invested to improve the conditions of the ports in West Africa. The maximum share of investment comes from countries like Ghana and Nigeria. 70% of Ghana’s overall trade is done through west African ports. However, the condition of these ports is deteriorating over the years. Recommendations to improve the ports of West Africa are as follows:

·       Planned maintenance program: The maintenance programs in the ports of West Africa should be properly planned. Sensible equipment installation should be highly prioritized during the maintenance program.

·       Well planned terminal simulation: The terminal simulation planning must be developed under the supervision of experienced port consultants. The budget should be properly developed and it must maintain the required number of technical equipment.

·       Ergonomic considerations: The effectiveness of ergonomic considerations lays in developing display layouts, seats and steering columns in the port.  It reduces the noise level and ensures safety in the port area.

·       Using the best machinery: The best types of machinery and equipment should be utilized to redesign the port area.

·       Well trained operators: Reputable and well-trained operators and manufacturers should be communicated to develop technical infrastructure of the port area.

·       Enhancement of maintenance cost: The maintenance cost at the port areas of West Africa should be higher. A 24*7 security system should be ensured.

·       Reducing port calls: Port calls should be reduced as it elicits the direct cost and increases maintenance budget.

·       Using original parts: Original equipment should be used while improving the infrastructure in the port areas of West Africa. All the equipment should be rechecked before using.

·       Constant monitoring: Restricted areas of the port should be monitored regularly. Moreover, normal people should not be allowed to visit restricted areas to ensure safety.

·       Supervising cargo operations: Cargo operations must be properly supervised in the port area. The responsible officers of the port area should know the whereabouts of cargo loading and must control cargo operations.
