Ans-B) The different ways a great earthquake like Tohoku 2011, Alaska 1964 or Cascadia 1700 can generate an ocean-crossing tsunami are as follow-

• Due to landslides- After giant landslide in Lituya Bay, Alaska In Mid 20th century,It is found that a huge tsunami can also be caused by submarine landslides(submarine landslide occurs when the sediments resting on the continents transferred into the deep oceans) basically these landslides leads to displacement of huge amount of water and producing earthquake leading to the formation of tsunami.But this tsunami was unable to make through the sea as it is struck by the land almost immediately.However this doesn't means that tsunami generated from the landslides cannot cross ocean,Recent studies shown that tsunami generated due to landslides from volcanic islands can travel across the sea and can cause huge damage to mankind.
• Due to deformation of sea flour-When deformation in sea flour occurs(due to earthquakes) it displaces the huge amount of water overlying on its surface leads to produce tsunami.These earthquakes are known as Tectonic earthquakes.Tsunami occurs when these movement in tectonics plates leads to produce thrust faults associated with convergent or destructive plate boundaries.These tsunami when generated have small height but as soon as they reach the shallow water their height abruptly increase (due to fluid mechanics concept) causing huge damages.It was the earthquake that triggered powerful tsunami waves of Tohoku 2011,japan.
