We seldom think about what occurs when we take this medication other than the fact that we will or should get better after a few days. Most are aware that antibiotics have been used for some time and their effectiveness is beginning to wane. In fact, today we have strains of microbes that have developed resistance to antibiotics such that we have named them Superbugs. One such Superbug, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become resistant to most antibiotics available and is a problem in many hospital settings. Review chapters 14 and 15 of your textbook for a review of Antimicrobial Drugs and Microbial Mechanisms of Pathogenicity. A patient has arrived in the ER critically ill. She had a minor surgery the week previously and was discharged home with antibiotics. Upon arrival to the ER, the patient presented gravely ill, the surgical wound red, swollen, puss filled and her temperature elevated. A post surgical infection is suspected. 1. Considering the example of a primary primary physician, it would be treated as an infection of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus only after skin examination.
2. Although the symptom like features States above including red and puss filled swollen wound and elevated body temperature may indicate possibility of sepsis during which fever is seen prominently.
3. Basic diagnosis is a must for isolating the strain in wound and to specify it as MRSA. But, as a physician, he would suggest diagnosis and on that basis, treatment can be made available. The symptom do indicate the infection. But diagnosis will case to clear out any doubts regarding other infections.

1. According to a family physician, the site where infection has occured will appear to be swollen and red. There will be formation of swollen and puss filled patches or lumps which can release the water fluid and usually tends to be painfull and irritational.
2. Apart from this, the patient can develop fever which is the response of immune system against the invading pathogens.

1. As stated in the scenario discussed above, the patient who approached the hospital underwent minor surgery which may indicate that the condition was not prevailing before. But chances are that minor surgery may have been done to remove the skin for biopsy in order to diagnose.
2. This is the condition which needs to be checked. As a physician depending upon speciality, one can perform surgery if needed. So, if minor surgery has been mentioned it indicates that there are chances that the step has been undertaken for biopsy associated studies. Chances of infection pre and post-surgery are suggestive from the scenario.
