A card is laid on top of the opening of a cup. A coin is then placed on top the center of the card. The card is quickly pulled out, and the coin drops straight down into the glass. Use Newton's First Law to explain why the coin dropped down instead of moving along with the card.

Answer #1

Newton's first law or the law of inertia states that a body continues in its state of rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless and until a force compels to change that state. Here the coin continues to be in the state of rest because there is no external force acting upon it.
