Describe how a planar (2D) linkage with respectively 1 DOF, 2 DOF, 3 DOF will move. What does it mean to have a linkage with more degrees of freedom than the dimension of space it lies in?

Since 6 total DOF possible for rigid body in space ( 3 rotational and 3 translational) so it is normal to have more DOF than dimension of space it is lying since each axis contributes 2 DOF ( 1 Rotation & 1 Translation) It simply means it can have extra freedom to rotate or translate in available directions. If it were mechanism then we would work on to control unnecessary DOF so that desired motion in particular direction can be achieved.
