A pytochemical known as Barago has been found to be a competitive inhibitor of 2,3- Biphosphoglycerate on hemoglobin. What would be the effect of Barago on: (i) Adult hemoglobin and (ii) fetal hemoglobin binding of oxygen and carbon dioxide? Please answer in at least 5 sentences. No info is needed on Barago except that it is a competitive inhibitor 2,3- Biphosphoglycerate on hemoglobin.

Answer #1

(i) 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG) decreases oxygen affinity of adult hemoglobin, stabilising its taut conformation. Since Barago is a competitive inhibitor of 2,3-BPG, it would destabilise the T state resulting in increased oxygen affinity. Consequently, this would result in inefficient oxygen delivery to the peripheral tissues and impaired removal of carbon dioxide.

(ii) Fetal hemoglobin only weakly binds 2,3-BPG, resulting in its higher oxygen affinity compared to adult hemoglobin. So Barago, as a competitive inhibitor of 2,3-BPG, would further increase the oxygen affinity of fetal hemoglobin.

    2) We discussed in class how the molecule 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG) is an inhibitor of hemoglobin (Hb). Answer the following questions about BPG and its regulation of oxygen binding: a) Would BPG have any effect on myoglobin’s ability to bind or release oxygen? If so, describe how BPG would affect myoglobin. If not, why? b) Based on the observation that BPG binds preferentially to partially deoxygenated Hb, briefly explain (1-2 sentences) where BPG is most likely to be most effective on...

    1. A researcher suspects that consumption of some fruit berries found in the amazon basin may have positive or negative effects on hemoglobin function. Can you predict what the effect of eating a significant amount of the berries would be on adult hemoglobin binding and distribution of oxygen if one of the phytochemicals in the berries has been found to be a competitive inhibitor of 2,3-Bisphosphoglycerate (2,3 BPG) (3 points). What do you think would be the effect of the...
