How does social learning theory and gang crime relate to one another ? what are the connections ?
Answer) Social learning theory proposed by Albert Bandura states that behaviors are socially learnt through observation and imitation. This learning theory has its application in crimes also. So it focuses on how an individual learn to become a criminal. These individuals learn the values, motives, drives and techniques for criminal behavior.
Especially in gang crimes, through interaction with one another a person learns crime. When an individual have a group of friends who are indulged in criminal activities , he observes them and imitate them. The tendency to commit a gang crime increases if this social influence is provided by main members of his life.
Learning a criminal behavior depends on both the probability of expsure to certain criminals and the consequence of their behavior which will act as a reinforcement in future. When a crime gives them money or fulfill their other needs it starts acting as a positive reinforcement and increases the likelihood of occurance of that behavior.
-Sometimes in a squad or gang, some members are not willing to do a crime, but with constant influence of their surrounding arises a need to conform with them.
