Answer #1

This is a great question to understand what we mean by a learning organization, firstly, and how Ford went about manufacturing vehicles in the yesteryear.

When Henry Ford started out to establish Ford, he was the pioneer in introducing assembly lines and semi-mechanized production lines, thus initiating the shift from hand-made vehicles. This ensured that the organization was not held back by any individual-worker level inefficiencies. Henry Ford made waves in the entire industry by doubling wages of workers, and also was famous for introducing the 8 hour working day concept (translating into 40 hours per week).

He had ensured that workers get precedence and did a lot to ensure that they had a comfortable A working environment. When he saw and sensed that there were worker inefficiencies, he invested more in mechanizing more of the assembly lines. Ford also introduced the conveyor belt to ensure that the factories were less dependent on working inefficiencies.

Learning Organization: A learning organization is one where managers look at ways to improve the employee's desirability and ability to manage the organization themselves. This is to make a more inclusive organization where the employees are important stakeholders. This means the employees should have sufficient interest in the organization, seek information about strategic initiatives, and understand why the organization is doing what it's doing.

Ford coupled the concept of learning organization along with multiple principles in management to ensure that they built a successful organization. For example, one of their CEOs conducted regular stand up meetings between employees and the upper management on a regular basis

This results in the employees being empowered, being abreast of what the organization is looking to do, and a direct connect with the Leadership Team. This also led to the creation of the famous "One Ford" concept, where you have One Company, One Objective, and everyone is included.

Hence, we can say that while Ford was successful due to multiple concepts, learning organization was one of them which ensured that their key resource, their own people, were empowered.
