P(the stock market declines) = 0.4

P(women's hemlines are lower) = 0.35

and P( the stock market declines and women's hemlines are lower) = 0.3

Since P( the stock market declines and women's hemlines are lower) P(the stock market declines) * P(women's hemlines are lower) (i..e )

So, we can say that the two events are not independent.
