1. (4) A true breeding strain (S1) of guinea pig has dominant alleles for fur texture (R), fur colour (C), and hair length (L). Another strain (S2) is homozygous for the recessive alleles of all three genes. The three genes are linked and arranged on the chromosome as follows:

R--------7 m.u. -------C----------------------18 m.u.-----------------L

The F1 trihybrid between the two strains is backcrossed to strain S2. Assume that there is no interference.
A) What proportion of the backcrossed progeny will resemble strain S1 for all three traits?
B) What proportion of the backcrossed progeny will resemble strain S2 for all three traits?
C) What proportion of the backcrossed progeny will resemble strain S1 for R and L but strain S2 for C?
D) What proportion of the backcrossed progeny will resemble strain S1 for R and C but strain S2 for L?

A pure-breeding strain of guinea pig with black fur is crossed to a pure breeding strain with white fur. A number of possible progeny phenotypes are listed below. What would each phenotype indicate about the dominance relationship between alleles of this locus? (i) All the progeny are white [1 mark] (ii) All the progeny are black [1 mark] (iii) All the progeny are grey [1 mark] (iv) All the progeny have patches of white and black fur [1 mark]

    5. (5) You are working with a farmer who has two varieties of true-breeding corn plants. The Durham variety has dominant alleles for short stature (S), yellow leaf colour (Y) and crinkled leaves (C). The UOIT variety has the recessive alleles for all three genes, tall stature (s), green leaf colour v),and smooth leaves (c). The farmer has mapped the genes and tells you that they are linked as shown below: 7 m.u 18 m.u The farmer has produced an...

Mapping genes with recombination frequencies in Drosophila 1. Suppose you know of three linked loci on the Drosophila X chromosome (a, b, and c). Assume that you are starting out with true-breeding stocks that show all three recessive traits and true-breeding stocks that show all three dominant traits. A. 4. The Hardy-Weinberg Proof. Consider a gene that has only two alleles R (dominant) and r (recessive). The sum total of all R plus all r alleles equals all the alleles at this gene locus, or 100% of all the alleles for that gene. Let p = the percentage or probability of all R alleles in the population. Let q = the percentage or probability of all r alleles in the population. If all R + all r alleles =...
