If dialysis is allowed to proceed to equilibrium before each change of dialysate buffer, the substances retained by the membrane are purified by a factor equal to the ratio of buffer volume to sample volume. If 5mL of a solution contains 1mol/L NaCl is placed in a dialysis membrane and then placed in 500 mL of water and allowed to reach equilibrium, what will the final concentration of NaCl be within the dialysis membrane? If the dialysis membrane above is removed and placed into a fresh 500 mL of water, what will the final concentration of NaCl be within the dialysis membrane after a second equilibration period?

Answer #1

0.25mol/L NaCl will be retained

This process is based on osmosis and it will continue till equilibrium is acheived.

    A. What is the Isoelectric point pI of the peptide Gly-Glu-Ala-Lys-Val ? B. A purified protein is in a Hepes buffer at pH 7 with 300 mM NaCl. A sample (2mL) of the protein solution is placed in a tube made of dialysis membrane and dialyzed against 1 L of the same Hepes buffer with no NaCl. Small molecules and ions (such as Na+, Cl-, and Hepes) can diffuse across the dialysis membrane, but the protein cannot. 1. Once the...

A buffer solution is able to maintain a constant pH when small amounts of acid or base are added to the buffer. Consider what happens when 1 mL of a 5 M solution is added or 0.005 mol of HCl are added to a 100.0 mL solution acetic acid buffer that contains 0.0100 mol of Acetic acid, HC,H,O,, and 0.0100 mol of sodium acetate, NaC,H,O,. The initial concentration of both the acid and the base are 0.0100 mol/ 0.1000 L...

please , i need Write the protocol by your own words ( steeps) 5. Add 1 volume of 70% ethanol to the cleared lysate, and mix immediately by pipetting. Do not centrifuge. Proceed immediately to step 6. Note: The volume of lysate may be less than 350 pl or 600 pl due to loss during homogenization and centrifugation in steps 3 and 4. Note: Precipitates may be visible after addition of ethanol. This does not affect the procedure. 6. Transfer...

It's a weak acid strong base titration Experiment 4: Identification of an unknown acid by titration Page 2 of 15 Background In this experiment, you will use both qualitative and quantitative properties to determine an unknown acid's identity and concentration. To do this analysis, you will perform a titration of your unknown acid sample-specifically a potentiometric titration where you use a pH meter and record pH values during the titration, combined with a visual titration using a color indi- cator...

Exercise 2 Separation of a Mixture Based on Acid-Base Properties One purpose of this exercise is to learn how to use a separatory funnel to extract a single component away from other compounds in solution. To do so, we will apply the principles of solubility and acid-base behavior you’re seeing in class. One of the compounds is neutral in the acid-base sense. It has no ability to either donate or accept a proton from an aqueous solution, and will remain...

Can you please explain in simple terms the methods of this experiment? I'm having difficulty visualizing and understanding what is being done. I have copied and pasted some of the text from the article. Thank you! Abstract : Obesity, high-fat diets, and subsequent type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are associated with cognitive impairment. Moreover, T2DM increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and leads to abnormal elevation of brain beta-amyloid levels, one of the hallmarks of AD. The psychoactive alkaloid caffeine...

I would assume that I would have to boil the water again...but...
