Estimate the minimum wind velocity needed to prevent the surface water of a shallow mud puddle from freezing at night if the air temperature is 34 F. Make any necessary assumptions to answer with heat transfer concepts.

Frost formation on ground is a problem creating scenario .

It happens at night due to the temperature difference at different altitude .

At night the temperature of the air nearer to the ground is lower compared to the air above the ground . It can be said that as altitude increases the temperature of the air increases untill one point .

So when the air temperature is 34 F and assuming a cloudy weather moderate winds of 5mph are sufficient to keep the puddle from freezing .

Cloudy weather helps the ground from not freezing as it retains the temperature and prevents fast heat loss of the ground.
