Briefly describe three (3) specific and different examples of cooperation between the innate (I) and adaptive (A) branches of the immune system. The following example shows the format to use for each of your three responses.Example: IgM (A) binds to the pathogen membrane and initiates the classical complement-mediated (I) membrane attack complex, leading to pathogen destruction.

14. You have developed an experimental vaccine to prevent infection by Hanta virus. To test the effectiveness of the vaccine, you recruit individuals to receive the vaccine who have not previously been exposed to Hanta virus. How would you confirm that these individuals have not ever been exposed to Hanta virus? [describe the concept, not an experiment]

19. Lymphocytes isolated from normal human peripheral blood were analyzed for expression of CD4, CD25 and FoxP3 proteins by flow cytometry and the results are shown in the dot plots below. The arrow between the left-hand and right-hand dot plots indicates that only the cells on the right-side of the vertical bar in the left-hand dot plot were further analyzed in the right-hand dot plot. In other words, the cells on the left-side of the vertical bar in the left-hand dot plot do not appear in the righthand dot plot.

a. Name three (3) distinct cell types that should be present in the peripheral blood lymphocyte population? (3 pts)

b. Regarding the left-hand dot plot, name three (3) distinct cell types that would localize to the leftside of the vertical bar i.e. the cells that do not appear in the right-hand dot plot? (3 pts)

c. Regarding the right-hand dot plot: with respect to the expression of CD4, CD25 and FoxP3 proteins, what are the characteristics of cells localized in the lower left quadrant? [For each of the three proteins, indicate “+” if the protein is expressed and ”–“ if it is not]. Also, name one specific cell type that would localize to this quadrant. (2 pts)

d. Regarding the right-hand dot plot: with respect to the expression of CD4, CD25 and FoxP3 proteins, what are the characteristics of cells localized in the upper right quadrant? [For each of the three proteins, indicate “+” if the protein is expressed and ”–“ if it is not]. Also, name one specific cell type that would localize to this quadrant. (2 pts)
