A child standing at the top edge of a 21.0-m high cliff kicks a soccer ball. The ball’s initial velocity is 13.1 m/s, in a direction 31.2° above the horizontal. Ignore drag for this problem. Provide all answers to 3 SF.

(a) State your choices for the speed and direction of the initial velocity, and use them to calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the ball's initial velocity.

(b) Calculate the vertical component of the ball's velocity just as it hits the ground.

(c) Explain why your calculator shows you an incorrect (or incomplete) answer to (b).

(d) Calculate how far from the cliff the ball lands.

(e) Calculate the speed of the ball just as it hits the ground.

(f) Whether you got an answer or not, how should the speed found in (e) compare to the speed chosen in (a)? Explain the physics (no equations or math).

A soccer player kicks a ball at an angle of 60 degrees above the ground. The soccer ball hits the ground some distance away. Neglect any effects due to air resistance. Is there any point at which the soccer ball's velocity and acceleration vectors are perpendicular to each other? No, because the vertical component of the velocity vector points in the same direction as the acceleration vector at all times. No, because the change in velocity vector and the acceleration...
