Assume you have an LED that requires 5V to turn on. Explain how contact potentials within the circuit will affect the value of the voltage source? Will the source need to greater than or less than the 5V needed for the LED? Ignore all other topics such as resistance and only focus on contact potentials for this question.

Answer #1

**Contact potential depends upon the work function of the materials involved in making circuit like P type and N type semiconductors are joined together to form PN junction .

**Contact potential =

Difference in potential of P and N regions of LED diode

**So , it is already present in the LED and has no role or relation with magnitude of supply voltage that is required to turn on the LED

so , contact potential will not effect source voltage

and 5V is enough to light up the LED

In this procedure, you get to write and execute an experimental procedure to find a Thévenin equivalent model for a Light Emitting Diode (LED) The simplest model for a diode is as a switch that is on (short circuit) when current tries to flow in the direction of the arrow in the diode symbol, and off (open circuit) when the current ties to flow in the direction opposite to the arrow. This model doesn't work all that well for an...
