The atomic orbitals combine to form a new set of equivalent orbitals. This process is known as hybridization. These hybrid orbitals are used for bond formation.

Hybridization can be defined as the process of intermixing of the orbitals of slightly different energies, so as to redistribute their energies.When one 2s orbital and three 2p orbitals of carbon hybridize, their is formation of four new sp3 hybrid orbitals.

A double bond has one sigma-bond and one pi-bond. A triple bond thus consists of a sigma-bond and two pi-bonds with the pi-bonds in different planes. Single bond has only one sigma bond.
