Function Generators:

The purpose of function generators is to create voltage signals that vary with time. Usually these signals take the form of sine, triangle or square wave signals. Most function generators are designed with a specific impedance as an input, usually 50 or 100 Ohms. This presents an interesting conundrum when the output impedance of the function generator doesn’t match up with the rest of the equipment being used. To solve this, the actual voltage amplitude of the component being worked by the function generator must be carefully measured as you cannot rely on the display of the function generator. If the impedances of the function generator and the equipment it is driving do not match or is less than the function generator, this could damage the function generator due to the fact that the function generator must drive a higher current.

Answer #1

The function generators are used to accomplish the task of making signals which vary in accordance to time. These signals exist in form of sine, triangle or square wave signals. Most of function generators are made for particular input impedance usually 50-100 ohms. But the problem arises when the output impedance is different from the instrument being used. To unravel this, particular voltage amplitude of element should be thoroughly measured as we can not rely on function generator reading. If the impedance of function generator and device is not same, it will harm the function genrator. This is because the function generator needs to drive higher current.
