In hydrophobic regions like the plasma membrane, b-pleated sheets are very uncommon. However, a related motif, the b-barrel (Figure 4-18 or 11-14) is quite common. Why?

Motifs allow for a variety of ways to form Hydrogen bond within the constituent chains of a B sheet. The freedom to form any type of Hydrogen bond with different angles helps in forming different types of motifs.

Whereas in plasma membrane, there should be preferential presence of some hydrophobic amino acids on the outer edge of the sheets, and hydrophilic residues in the inner side because we know the plasma membrane is lipid bilayer and so hydrophobic.
