Answer #1

Yes, this will affect the decision of students. Before the certain date, the tuition is avoidable. Before the certain date, students compare the expected benefits to the tuition cost. If they feel that they are performing well and these courses are serving as value addition to their knowledge then they should continue with the course. It is possible that on successful completion of the course they may land up into a good job and can recover the cost of course. But there is other side of the coin also. After this date, it is sunk cost. A sunk cost refers to money that has already been spent and which cannot be recovered. If they are not performing well and they keep on continuing with the course then this cost will become sunk cost which cannot be recovered as students are not going to get any monetary benefit from the course in terms of getting good job. Also such a course will only add to their expenses and there will be no additional to their knowledge. After this date, they compare the expected benefits only to avoiding the hassle costs of continuing to participate in the course.

In the United States, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores are used by universities when selecting students for admission. Private companies and high schools offer SAT preparatory courses to help students improve their scores. This has led some people to ask, "Do SAT preparatory classes effectively increase SAT scores?" The following study, cited in a major newspaper, claims that they do (but not by a substantial amount): "A new study . . . shows that [SAT preparatory] classes are effective in...

While no one would argue that college football is "big business" on many campuses, a decision made by the NLRB a few years ago might have led players to be treated as employees first—and students second. Athletes on scholarship at Northwestern University in Chicago asked the NLRB to determine their right to organize a labor union. Their rationale was that individuals often spend a majority of their time on the football field doing the required "work" that it takes to...

Many employers provide 401K matching That is, once an employee has been with the firm for a sufficient period (often one year), the firm will match the employee’s contributions to the firm’s available 401K plan up to a certain percentage. Assume that an employee has just become eligible for the firm’s matching plan. In this case, the firm will match the employee’s investments up to 6% of the employee’s salary. (If the employee contributes 1%, the company puts in 1%,...

Commentary: I’ve been fortunate enough to work for two local universities in recent years. One is (obviously) WCU. The other is Temple. Both fine institutions. One of the courses I taught was to host a series of weekly lectures by various industry pundits, and resident professors. One such professor came to my attention via a colleague in the Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) department. It was not unusual for colleagues within the department to recommend various speakers for different reasons....

Point estimates often need to be nested in layers of analysis, and it is the Invariance Principle that provides a pathway for doing so. An example would be estimating Mu after having to estimate Alpha and Beta for some distributions. In simpler statistics class exercises (like those we've seen up until now), this is typically avoided by providing the lower level parameters within exercises or problems (eg, asking you for Mu by giving you the Alpha and Beta). The only...
