Answer #1

Bases neutralize acids to produce salt and water. Ammonia is basic and the mutant species of Burkholderia cannot produce oxalic acid. Therefore the ammonia accumulates and is not neutralized by the oxalic acid (since none of it is produced). This way the mutant species are eliminated.

Normal Burkholderia bacteria can produce oxalic acid which neutralizes the excess ammonia keeping its concentration low, this way the normal Burkholderia cells survive.

    3. Nitrogen Fixation is a process by which some bacteria can convert N2 into ammonia. This process is very important in making the element nitrogen, a component of amino acids and nucleotides, available to ecosystems. Even though N2 makes up 80% of the atmosphere, nitrogen is the limiting nutrient in many ecosystems. Because nitrogen fixation is so energetically expensive, bacteria will only synthesize the proteins needed for this process if there is no available source of already fixed nitrogen, such...

ALS is caused by the accumulation of misfolded protein that eventually leads to neuronal cell death. Just as is the case with prion diseases (e.g., Mad Cow disease), there is a spreading effect: even the presence of a small amount of misfolded (e.g., mutant) protein can cause other WT proteins of the same kind to become misfolded, which join the large misfolded aggregate forming in diseased cells. This is the principle mechanism thought to be behind the spreading of neurodegeneration...
