Lowell in Massachusetts was a mill that provided work for the women who were daughters of the New England farmers who had properties but later any woman was able to volunteer to work in the mill. Lowell attracted the women with boarding schools and an opportunities come out of the controlling men in their households thus providing them with economic independence. Although the wages were half of what the men used to get women were happy with the money they earned in order to support their households and education of their siblings. The working conditions were not encouraging and many women struggled to work to the speed which the company demanded. Nevertheless, these mills helped women gain financial freedom and fresh air of freedom from their social oppression. The stereotyping and discrimination was prevalent both in the society and in the factory but these women through their perseverance and patience. They also joined the labor unions and fought against the unhealthy working conditions and the low wages that the mills and other industries offered. They were the pioneers in bringing more women to the labor market thus creating history not only for themselves but for the entire women community who were struggling to break free from the clutches of the male dominated society.
