Q) Explain what is meant by “like dissolves like” in terms of intermolecular forces and enthalpic considerations.

    1. Consider how else I may ask a question on this concept for the exam. You could change the numbers, the chemical, the type of matter.     2. Indicate how you are confident this is correct or explain what the answer means (for mathematical questions include a discussion of the reason the answer is given to the number of sig figs/decimal places reported.)

"Like dissolves like"- In Chemistry this statement simply means that a chemical will only dissolve in a solvent if it has similar structure to that solvent. The formation of solution will take place only when the intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules are similar which may be in the form of hydrogen bonding .so polar molecules will dissolve in polar solvents and non polar molecules will dissolve in non polar solvents.

If we talk about enthalpy then, solution will form only when the interaction energy between solute and solvent is greater than sum of solute-solute and solvent-solvent interaction energies.This is how we calculate enthalpy of solution.

Hsolution=Hsolute-solute+Hsolvent-solvent+Hmixing (solution formation will take place when Hsolution<0)

This case will arise only when solute and solvent have similar properties.

Eg: If we mix water (polar) & oil(non-polar) no solution will form .They will form two immiscible layers under normal conditions.
