• Discuss artist who inspired you: research his/her life, work, artwork, process.

*Some of you have asked if you can choose an artist to research and discuss who is not covered in the course reading. The answer is: Yes – as long as that artist was part of the Dada or Surrealism. Answer #1

Dada and Surrealism were artistic, literary and intellectual movements of the early 20th century that were instrumental in defining Modernism. I was really inspired by Hannah Höch. His  use of photomontage along with the technique of taking words and images from the established press to create a fresh, subversive statement that was highly innovative for the time. It was so much captivating for the times when things were changing and beginning to turn new that there was nothing to take load about and all looked so much sorted and easy to handle by us. His work was a blend of eclecticism and eccentricities of Dadaism, but also makes a pointed political statement against the staid establishment; it is a carefully crafted homage to anarchistic opposition.
